How often should students practice?

How often should students practice

Consistency matters more than anything, but practice time should match a student’s age, skill level, and desired goals.

Here’s a helpful guide:

  • 15–20 min/day – very young learners
  • 20 min/day – elementary students (elementary school)
  • 45 min/day – intermediate (middle school)
  • 60+ min/day – advanced (high school & beyond)

How can parents support their child’s practice?

Kids don’t always see the value of daily practice — that's where parents can help! Here are a few tips to help nurture your child’s practice:

  • Set a routine: Choose a regular, quiet time, such as after school or before dinner!
  • Keep it fun: Music should feel rewarding, not like a chore!
  • Encourage & reward: Encourage & reward: Celebrate effort to build a positive mindset!
  • Stay flexible: If one instrument doesn’t click, explore another!
